I set out disposable plates,
not the smooth, Styrofoam ones from
elementary school parties but the
ones with ridges.
You usually need two.
I hand you another.
Every detail matters
when details are all
that’s left of something.

I write down the number of plates
57. The number of guests
32. The number of appetizers
4. The number of times
I thought I should die
before anyone gets here
